Youth Club (Homework Group) Report -

Prepared By:
Mr R Khan -48 Pembroke House (Initiator) Mrs Jill Sousa - 20 Winchester House (Supporter) Mrs L Nablisi - 2 Taunlon House Ms D Coreana - 14 Clovelly House

Introduction
The group has run successfully for about three months now and we are confident that it will continue to grow further in the next few months. We also anticipate that the numbers will go up further during the Spring/Summer period and therefore, we would like to make preparations to meet Health and Safely requirements as well as exploring the possibility of expanding the scope as a Youth Club.
Presently the group meets for two hours every Friday between 5.00pm and 7.00pm to offer professional help to children with their homework.
Findings

Following an assessment of our activities and in consultation with the teachers we have:
o Identified two (2) age groups (i.e. 5-8yrs and 9-13yrs).
o Identified the need to split the sessions into separate classes.
o Engaged the services of two qualified teachers and one assistant.
o 22 children on our register.

To ensure that it is running properly and to attract adequate funding we are proposing to:
1. Involve some parents on a voluntary basis (3 parents at a time) to manage the
kitchen and maintain the hall during and after the lessons so that the children
can have drinks if they wish to.
2. Have access to a cupboard for storage of teaching materials to ensure that
teaching material is centralised.
3. To discuss future changes in circumstances in order to review our needs in
terms of the use of the Hall's facilities.
It is our belief that this group will be a good foundation for the children on the Estate to meet, learn and develop their social skills.

Recommendations

We would therefore, appreciate the support of the Association in developing this aspect of our community work by formally allowing the use of the Residents Hall permanently as per its terms and conditions. This activity will also help to occupy the children and divert their attention from engaging in crime and anti-social behaviour particularly during the summer season.

We also believe that the Estate Office and other agencies will have access to intelligence information such as personal details, which is not always available, and may offer a way of monitoring and controlling the behaviour and activities of our kids outside the Youth Club.

As part of our strategy to get things right we are in the process of inviting some officials to visit our sessions to familiarise themselves with our work and to offer useful contributions towards the way forward. The following people are due to be invited soon and we will be grateful if the Association could arrange to delegate a Committee member to join in.

Invitees:
Mr Mike Wilson
Mr Simon Milton
Councillor Susan Burbridge
Mr Neil Fergus

We hope that the group will receive your kind consideration and co-operation.
